In the 1930s there was a return to a more genteel, ladylike appearance. Waistline curves returned and hairstyles became softer and curlier that the sleek styles of the 1920s. Clothes were feminine, sweet and tidy by day with a return to real glamour at night. The “evening gown” emerged during this time because up until the 1930s wealthy women had not needed practical day wear. But with the Depression and families relying less on servants, there arose a need for more freedom of movement due to the busier, more demanding work women were doing. More luxurious gowns were kept for the evening. Sunbathing had recently become a trend, so full length backless evening dresses that would show off more skin were extremely popular.
